PDF Toolkit

Unlock PDF Files

Remove the password from a PDF you can open, or lift the print and copy restrictions it was locked with. Type the password once and download a copy that opens without one. It all happens in your browser.

Your PDF and its password stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

Free, no signup, no upload — PDFs are processed on your device.

Why it helps

Why unlock PDFs in your browser

  • Password-protected PDFs are usually the private ones: bank statements, payslips, tax forms and ID documents. Here they never leave your device.

  • PDFs that open fine but block printing or copying are unlocked without asking for any password.

  • Pages are never turned into images. Text stays selectable and searchable, and links and bookmarks keep working.

How to use it

How to unlock a PDF

  1. 1

Drop the locked PDF into the tool.

  2. 2

If it needs a password to open, type it. Files that only restrict printing or copying skip this step.

  3. 3

Download the unlocked copy. It opens in any viewer without a password.

Quick tips

Unlock PDF tips

  • The first unlock downloads a small engine, about half a megabyte, once. After that, unlocking starts straight away.

  • Passwords are case-sensitive. If one doesn't work, check Caps Lock and the keyboard language.

  • Keep the original if it carries a digital signature: unlocking rewrites the file, so the signature no longer validates.

FAQ

Unlock PDF questions

Can it unlock a PDF if I've forgotten the password?

No. It removes a password you know. It doesn't guess or crack passwords, so a PDF that needs an unknown password to open stays locked. Ask whoever sent the file, or check the email or message it came with.

Is my PDF or password uploaded?

No. Unlocking runs in a background worker in your browser. The file and the password you type never leave your device.

What is the difference between a user password and an owner password?

A user (open) password is needed to open the PDF at all. An owner (permissions) password lets it open but blocks printing, copying or editing. This tool removes both: the first once you type it, the second without asking.

Which kinds of PDF encryption are supported?

Standard PDF password security in every version: RC4 40-bit and 128-bit, AES-128 and AES-256, as written by Acrobat, banks, office apps and scanners. PDFs locked to a digital certificate instead of a password aren't supported.

Will the unlocked PDF look different?

No. Every page is copied exactly as it was, minus the encryption. Nothing is recompressed or turned into an image.
